Archiva: Capture Web Citations

Archiva Capture Web Citations uses the Archiva Clipboard Watcher to capture bibliographic data (e.g. an article's title, author, journal, etc) by merely copying it to the clipboard (Ctrl+C). This feature is included in Archiva+. Some sites (e.g., JSTOR, ATLA, Project Muse, EBSCOHost) may require a subscription.

The steps involved in capturing data are simple:

1Make sure Archiva is active. There will be an Archiva icon in the System Tray at the bottom right corner of your screen. If you do not see this icon, it is probably hidden. Click the Show Hidden Icons on your system tray (an up arrow) to show the hidden icons, then drag the Archiva icon to your system tray.
2Go to the web site that contains the bibliographic data.
You can initiate the search from your browser or other program.
You can initiate a search from Nota Bene or Ibidem by clicking Tools, Archiva, Clipboard Watcher - Capture Web Citations, or by pressing Ctrl+Shift+O. See Open Web Pages.
3Perform a search on the web site. Make sure you are in a display view which Archiva recognizes. A single site and/or service provider may offer multiple results views, each with different amounts of information.  Be sure to select the view that offers the most comprehensive bibliographic data (or at least enough data to allow the work to be properly cited). For notes about specific supported formats, click Tools, Archiva, Configure Archiva, and click on one of the formats in the list at the top of the dialog.
4Select (highlight) the Title, Author and other fields to be captured (text can be selected by using the mouse or by holding the Shift button and using the keyboard arrow keys).
If you are on a page that contains only one record, press Ctrl+A to select the whole page.
If the search results page provides checkboxes to mark individual records, and your browser supports this, you can select all of the records and check the records you want. The records that are both checked and selected (highlighted) will be added. Your browser must save the check-box status when copying text to the clipboard, and not all browsers do this.
5Press Ctrl+C to copy the selected records to the clipboard and to add them to Archiva's database of captured records.
6Results are presented in a temporary Ibidem database called {Captured Web Records}. You can edit the records in this database and/or add them to your permanent Ibidem database.
7Check the records that you would like to add to your database and use the bar at the bottom left of the screen to specify which records you would like to add (current record, checked record, etc.) and which database should receive the record(s). Click the first button to the right to add the record (s) or the second one to check each record for duplicates before adding.

When you press Ctrl+C, Archiva's clipboard watcher automatically converts the record(s) to Ibidem format, and adds it (or them) to a temporary Ibidem database called {Captured Web Records}. The on-line source, along with the date the record was captured, is also recorded.
