With Archiva+, you can save, organize and launch web searches. Archiva offers an alternative to the Favorites feature of your browser, adding the following capabilities:
| • | Open your favorite search sites from within Nota Bene and/or from within Ibidem. |
| • | Access your preferred web sites using the keyboard, and with far fewer keystrokes or hand (mouse) movements. Use Ctrl+Shift+O, followed by the number of the item in your favorites list, followed by Enter. To access the most recently accessed site again, simply press Ctrl+Shift+O and then Enter. |
| • | Add up to 1000 different favorite sites. |
| • | Sort the favorites list by Name, Date Last Accessed, or Category (the equivalent of Folders in Internet Explorer). |
| • | Specify which of the above sequences you want the list displayed in the next time you open it. The most recently accessed site will be highlighted. By arranging by Date Last Accessed, you can combine the functionality of the Favorites list and the drop-down list of most recently accessed sites. |
| • | Edit the URL for the favorites (and not only the name that is displayed). |
| • | Add a comment, description, or other note for each favorite. |
While Archiva was designed to manage web searches for bibliographic data, Archiva can also be used to access any web site directly from Nota Bene. You could add any site to your "favorites" list. Try adding Google, your University web site, a site with a weather forecast for your area, your favorite newspaper, or any site at all. You will then be able to open your favorite sites directly from Nota Bene by pressing Ctrl+Shift+O.
The Archiva Open/Add Web Pages dialog contains a list of web pages that can be accessed from the main Nota Bene Screen or from the Ibidem screen. When the list is shown for the first time, the web sites from which Archiva can capture bibliographic records (see Capture Records below) will be displayed. You can delete any of these that you do not expect to use. Note that entries for some of these may be lacking a URL, since the precise URL that you use depends on the arrangements that the provider has with your university. You will need to add the URL that you normally use to access your subscription-based site.
You can add a web site to the Archiva Open/Add Web Pages dialog from Nota Bene or from your browser. When you add a site, or edit a site, make the changes first, and then click the Add or Edit button.
To add a web site to the Archiva Open/Add Web Pages dialog from Nota Bene:
| 1 | Click Tools, Archiva, Quick Open (Saved) Web Pages or press Ctrl+Shift+O to open the Open/Add Web Pages dialog, |
| 2 | Type the name in the text box above the Favorites column. If necessary, delete other text in that box. |
| 3 | Select the category from the category list, or type a new one. |
| 4 | Type or paste the URL (near the bottom of the dialog, below the list of existing favorites). If necessary, delete other text in that box. |
| 5 | Type in an optional description, comment, or note in the Notes box. If necessary, delete other text in that box. If you are accessing a site that requires a password, the password can be typed in the Notes box, and you can then copy and paste from this box to the proper field on the web site. |
To add a web site to the Archiva Open/Add Web Pages dialog from your browser:
| 1 | Select the URL in the Address box, and press Ctrl+C to copy it to the clipboard. |
| 2 | Switch to Nota Bene, and open the Open/Add Web Pages dialog (click Tools, Archiva, Open/Add Web Pages or press Ctrl+Shift+O). |
| 3 | Press Ctrl+V to paste the URL into the URL text box (near the bottom of the dialog). |
| 4 | Enter the other desired information (name, category, and/or notes). |
Unlike with your browser, you have to type in the name of the favorites, rather than having it entered automatically. Although this is a little more work, it is easier in Nota Bene to type in something more descriptive than the title inserted by the browser (this is usually the title of the page, which is often not adequately descriptive). Since the items entered here are descriptions of the sites you expect to visit regularly, taking the time to type in the best descriptive name possible will, in many cases, make searching the web easier than using your browser's management tools, especially when you take into account the other benefits of the Archiva Open/Add Web Pages dialog, as noted above.
If you want to add multiple sites at a time, you can leave the Open/Add Web Pages dialog open, and toggle between it and your browser.
