INTRODUCING NOTA BENE 14

READ ON, OR BUY, OR LOG-IN TO UGPRADE

Incremental improvements? Of course. But also entirely new, long-sought capabilities in a re-imagined and re-engineered set of tools.

With the arrival of version 14, Nota Bene’s research and writing suite now provides both first-time-ever features requested by long-time users and innovative new capabilities coveted by any researcher.

But amidst all the enhancements, it's the same familiar Nota Bene that existing users have relied on for years, just vastly improved and now even easier to use.

Check out all of Nota Bene's non-pareilled research capabilities still — no, make that “especially” — unique after all these years...

Introducing Pop-Up Orbis

1  Instant & Effortless Access to Everything Important

Creation of textbases of grouped files and other information/data sets is now done automatically, behind the scenes, in as little as five seconds, from the moment you first start Nota Bene 14 — you don't need to do a thing

2  Automatic & Immediate Creation of Multiple Textbases

Pop-up Orbis provides immediate access to automatically created textbases of:
  • Current folder/subfolders files
  • Recently opened NB files (the last 100 of them)
  • Ibidem database records
  • Ibidem note-taking files
  • Ibidem-linked PDF files (with Orbis+)
  • Current file or other files in a Manuscript
3  Real-Time Responsiveness as You Write & Research

Changed content of on-screen files are updated instantly in real time in the background — there's no need to close Orbis and restart to incorporate new or changed content

4  View & Access All Workflow Elements Simultaneously

For the first time, searches and retrievals are presented seamlessly within the user’s document window. By docking into the word-processing application, Pop-up Orbis provides a new user experience that neatly integrates qualitative data research into the user’s writing, providing users with uncanny speed and efficiency, along with several practical advantages:
  • You can easily switch between different textbases, to search the precise elements required by your work
  • Simply double-click on any word in the document and its search results are immediately presented
5  Effortlessly Tag Your Text for Finer-Tuned Searches

Coding of note-taking files — or any file — with user-designated keywords is now done in a flash. Users are even given a choice as to where to place keywords in the document: at the start of paragraph (regardless of cursor location), or at cursor. And for the first time, keyword entry of user-designated keywords follows the methodology long used in Ibidem by listing keywords in alpha order, facilitated by the familiar type-ahead mechanism.

Introducing DOCX/Zotero Smart Conversions

Open a DOCX document from inside Nota Bene 14 and the program will recognize its format and, as appropriate, give you the option of running a new, elegant, and accurate conversion tool that provides step-by-step guidance in turning your original DOCX document into a native Nota Bene document formatted with any of the built-in academic styles.

Every component of the DOCX research document — Title, Author(s), Abstract, Heads of multiple levels, Body Text areas, and Back Matter such as Bibliography/Reference List — is properly formatted.

Beyond this text conversion and conformation to style layout requirements, all the references in the original DOCX document that had been cited using Zotero are:
  1. Are Automatically incorporated into the user’s Ibidem database
  2. Automatically become Ibidem “smart cites” in your new NB document — the citations become dynamically updated (re-contextualized, reformatted) as you write further or edit, or even change the citation style
DOCX documents are now easily and safely re-purposed using Nota Bene’s vaunted academic style layouts along with Ibidem’s referencing powers.

User Experience Designed for Efficiency

With an appropriately sized screen, users can have Popup Orbis open alongside the newly enhanced Popup Ibidem, both within the word processor’s window. Users can thus benefit from an integrated and comprehensive view of the writing, citing and the textbase research/keyword coding platforms. This is an interruption-free work environment not seen before.

Ibidem Innovations

1  Full Bi-Directional Interchange (New Levels of Collegial Collaboration)

Nota Bene version 14 introduces Ibidem data export (along with an enhanced data-import operation) to RIS format. For the first time, Ibidem users can fully interchange bibliographic data with users of different reference programs.

2  Popup-up Ibidem With Capabilities of Full Ibidem in a Small-Footprint

Popup Ibidem now includes features previously only accessible in Full Ibidem (which itself has been enhanced), providing an incredible richness of citation power in a resizable pop-up or side-docked mode.

3  Ibidem Without Borders — Never Worry About Amassing Too Many Records

The original 32,000 record limit has been removed, making the number you can add almost limitless (OK, there is a limit — you'll have to stop at sixteen million!)

Built-In Archiva Library-Search & Citation Capture

For the first time, searching on-line libraries and capturing citation data from sites such as JStor and Project Muse is part of the basic Workstation. (And of course there's Archiva+ for those who want even more broad ranging citation capture and conversion options.)
