Notes on Printer Drivers

Sometimes printer drivers, even those from major manufacturers, can cause problems with various applications, especially under Vista. For example, the hpz3r4v2.dll driver used by various newer HP printers has had various problems reported with it in programs as diverse as Excel and Word 2007 (simply do a Google search for “hpz3r4v2.dll” to see for yourself); it also causes problems in Nota Bene.

Fortunately, until HP fixes this problem, you can still use your new printer.

1. Click the Windows Start icon, and then select Control Panel, Printers, and then right click and select Add Printer, and then follow the prompts in the printer installation wizard.
--When asked about the printer port, select the port to which your printer is installed. If you are uncertain, you should probably select “USB001 (Virtual printer port for USB),” since almost all new printers are USB printers.
--When given the opportunity to select a printer, choose an older printer similar to the one you are have. For example, if you are using a new DeskJet/OfficeJet, try the HP OfficeJet 6300 series All-in-One, or, if you are using an HP laser printer, try the HP4, since both of these suggested drivers are known to work properly.
--When given the option, make sure that this new printer is set as the default in Windows.

2. After the printer has been installed, start Nota Bene, and use File, Print to select that new printer as the printer that Nota Bene should use. If for any reason you cannot start Nota Bene (or it crashes when you start), quit Nota Bene and restart one more time, again selecting the newly installed printer.

3. Once the new printer is successfully selected, quit Nota Bene, and then reselect your original printer driver as the default printer in Windows (use Start, Control Panel, Printers).

You should now be able to edit and print in Nota Bene.

This process uses a printer driver which does not conflict with Nota Bene (or some other programs) as the Nota Bene printer driver, while retaining the native printer driver for your printer as the default for other Windows applications (although, as noted, it may also cause problems with them). This alternative driver should let you access all the text features of your printer (including embedded graphics) when printing from Nota Bene. What is not available from within Nota Bene are the advanced picture management options on the LCD, or similar features, but Nota Bene does not use these in any case.
