Thesaurus

Nota Bene provides thesauri in several languages. If language markers in the file indicate that a language other than English is active, the program will automatically open the thesaurus in the correct language. For more information about adding language markers to the file, see Multilingual Spell Check.

To use the thesaurus:

1Place the  cursor on the word for which you want a synonym.
2Click Proof, Thesaurus (or press Shift+Ctrl+?). The Thesaurus dialog will open.
3At the top of the dialog, you will see the word that is being looked up. You can type in a different word.
4On the left side of the dialog, you will see that synonyms are grouped by "parts of speech" or by "meaning groups." The meaning group is identified as the first word in each part-of-speech group. You can change this using the drop down list immediately under Meaning Group/Article of Speech list box. Click on one of the groups listed on the left to see synonyms on the right.
5To replace the word in your document with a synonym, click on the synonym you wish to select.  It should appear in the box marked "Replacement term".  Click Replace.
6The Lookup feature can be used to generate additional lists of synonyms.

Highlight the synonym that you would like to use to generate additional lists.

Click Lookup

Synonyms for the highlighted word will appear.

Each time the Lookup feature is used, the highlighted word will be added to the Lookup History list.  This list can be displayed by clicking the arrow to the right of the Lookup History box.  Return to any previous list by clicking the word in the Lookup History list.

The Previous button can be used to backtrack through the lookup history.

Note that it is possible to change the function of the Shift+Ctrl+? key so that it will not open the thesaurus, or so that it will open the thesaurus only under certain circumstances. See Configure: Advanced Tab.
