Ibidem Search From Within a Document

There are three ways to search the contents of particular fields in Ibidem. Two methods are used from within Ibidem to search particular fields in the database (See Fast Search and Text Search). The third method allows you to automatically search, as you are editing a document, any or all fields in your database for a word that occurs in the document that you are currently writing/editing.

To specify the field in which to search for a word:

1Place your cursor on the word you want to look up in your NB document.
2Press Ctrl+Shift+F7 or right click on the word and select Lookup Options (Ibidem).
3Ibidem will open and the Ibidem Quick Lookup dialog will appear. You can choose to look up the word in a particular indexed field (i.e., the fields that are searched using Ibidem's Fast Search), a seanrch group (more than one field at a time), any other non-indexed field, all fields at once, or you can search for a particular record number.
4Press OK to search the database for that term.

Once you have specified the field you want to search in Ibidem, you do not need to do so again for future searches (unless you decide to search in a different field).

To look up a word in your Ibidem database:

1Place your cursor on the word you want to look up in your NB document.
2Press Ctrl+F7 or right click and select Lookup Word (Ibidem).
3Ibidem will open and will search for that word in the field you specified earlier (using Ctrl+Shift+F7). If the word is not found, the Ibidem Quick Lookup dialog will appear and you can specify a different field to look up the term in.

To look up Ibidem records linked to Note-Taking files retrieved by an Orbis search

This feature also allows you to quickly find Ibidem entries for linked note-taking files that you recently retrieved in Orbis. For example, you might use Orbis to search for files that contain the term "Freud," and retrieve a paragraph from your note-taking file linked to the Ibidem entry for Paul Ricoeur (in the Samples database). You might then insert that paragraph into your text directly from Orbis, and immediately continue editing your document. Later, you can insert the citation for the Ricoeur work by pressing Ctrl+Shift+F7, and choosing the last item on the list: Reference for Last Orbis Note-Taking Entry. You will be taken directly to the record for the note-taking file you accessed most recently from Orbis and can immediately insert the citation into your document.
