Vertical Ruler

The Vertical Ruler is a graphic interface that allows the user to adjust a document's top and bottom margins. The vertical ruler can be displayed or hidden by clicking View, Rulers and then checking or unchecking Vertical Ruler.

Top Margin

Towards the top of the vertical ruler, there are three horizontal lines. Move your mouse pointer to each line and pause and a label will appear identifying the line. The top line is 0.25 inches from the top and it shows the non-printable area at the top  0.25 inches of the page. This cannot be adjusted. The second line shows the position of the header offset, the amount of space from the top of the page to the header. The third line (separating the gray area from the white area of the ruler) shows the position of the top margin, the amount of space from the top of the page to the top of the text. The second and third lines can be moved as follows:

1Your cursor can be placed anywhere in the document. Any change in margins will affect the whole document.
2Move the mouse pointer to either the header offset line or the top margin line. When you place the pointer on the line, it will change into a vertical line with arrows on the end.
3Press the left mouse button and hold it while you move (or drag) the arrow to a new position and release the mouse button.

Bottom Margin

The bottom margin is adjusted in exactly the same way as the top margin with one difference. Nota Bene allows for some variation in the bottom margin so that adjustment can be made for widows and orphans. In addition to the footer offset line and the bottom margin line, there are lines showing the position of the maximum and minimum bottom margins. All four of these lines can be moved using the by pointing and dragging as described in the three steps under Top Margin above.
