Widows and Orphans

A widow is the last line or two of a paragraph carried over to the top of the next page. An orphan is the first line or two of a paragraph at the bottom of a page. You can adjust settings for widows and orphans so that a single line (or more) will not be separated from the rest of the paragraph when the page breaks.

To prevent widows and orphans:

1Move the cursor to the top of the document, or to the point where you want to begin preventing widows and orphans.
2Click Insert, Breaks
3The Breaks dialog box will appear. Click on the Paragraphs tab.
4Click the Prevent Widows and Orphans box and use the slider controls to set the minimum number of lines that can be separated from the rest of a paragraph at the top (widows) or bottom (orphans) of a page.
5Click OK

You can also use the action line to prevent widows and orphans. See WD and OR commands
