The margins in Nota Bene can be set using the action line. Side margins can be set for one-sided or two-sided printing. For one-sided printing, you set the left margin and the right margin. For two-sided printing, you set the inside margin and the outside margin so that the odd-numbered pages and the even-numbered pages are mirror images of each other. This way you can, for example, allow a larger margin on the inside (the left margin for odd-numbered pages and the right margin for even-numbered pages) so that there will be extra room for binding the printed document. The OS (one sided) command is used to establish whether you are using one-sided or two-sided printing and the OF (offset) command is used to set the side margins. The TP and BT commands are used to set the top and bottom margins. Finally, you can adjust for and using the WD and OP commands.
For all of the commands on this page, the default unit of measurement is inches unless you have changed the default units or unless you specify a different unit as part of the command. The examples given assume that you have not changed the defaults and therefore, inches is the default. For more information, see Units of Measurement.
To set the side margins:
| 1 | Press F9 to access the action line. |
| 2 | Type OS 1 for one-sided printing (one-sided on) or OS 0 for two-sided printing (one-sided off). (In the command OS 0, the first character is the letter O and the last character is the number 0 or zero.) |
| 3 | Press F10 to set the format to one-sided or two-sided. |
| 4 | Press F9 to access the action line. |
| 5 | Type OF x,y where x and y are the width of the left and right margins (one-sided printing) or the inside and outside margins (two-sided printing). |
| 6 | Press F10 to set the side margins. |
Example: The command OF 1.5,1 will set the left margins at 1.5 inches and the right margins at 1 inch if one-sided is on. If one-sided is off, it will set the inside margins at 1.5 inches and the outside margins at 1 inch.
To set the top margins:
| 1 | Move the cursor to the beginning of the file (Ctrl+Home) |
| 2 | Press F9 to access the action line. |
| 3 | Type TP m,n where m and n are two numbers as follows: |
| • | m = the distance of the running header from the top of the page. |
| • | n = the distance of the body of text from the top of the page. n must be greater than m. The default unit of measure is lines unless specified (see Units of measurement). |
| 4 | Press F10 to set top margins. |
Example: The command TP .5,1 would produce a header that is half an inch from the top of the page and body text that is 1 inch from the top of the page. The command TP 2cm,5cm would produce a header that is two centimeters from the top of the page and body text that is 5 centimeters from the top of the page.
To adjust the bottom margins:
| 1 | Press F9 to access the action line. |
| 2 | Type BT f,n,m,x where f,n,m, and x are four numbers as follows: |
| • | f = the distance from the bottom of the page to the bottom of the running footer. |
| • | n = the nominal distance from the bottom of the page to the bottom of the text area. n must be greater than f. |
| • | m = the minimum distance from the bottom of the page to the bottom of the text area. m must be between f and n (less than n and greater than f). |
| • | x = the maximum distance from the bottom of the page to the bottom of the text area x must be substantially greater than n (a difference of at least one inch). |
| 3 | Press F10 to set the bottom margins. |
Example: The command BT .5,1, .75, 2 would produce a footer that is half an inch from the bottom of the page and body text that is 1 inch from the bottom of the page, allowing for the end of the body text to vary so that it may be .75 inches from the bottom of the page or 2 inches from the bottom of the page.. It is important to allow for some variation in the bottom of the body text, especially if footnotes are being used. For example, if a footnote falls on the last line of text, the note must appear on the same page, or if there isn't room on the page, then the last line of text and the note must go to the next page. In this case, the bottom margin might need to be increased slightly.
