Restore Database from an .NBB file

File, Restore Database can be used with the .NBB files that are created when you back up a database using File, Backup Database. You can use this function to move a database to a new computer, or to overwrite a database with a newer copy of the same database (i.e., to update your database with a copy of the database to which you have added new records). If you backed up your database by copying files or folders to a backup location, see Restore Database from Copied Files/Folders.

To restore a database from an .NBB file:

1Click File, Restore Database. The Restore Database dialog will open.
2Browse to the NBB file that you wish to restore and check the boxes to indicate which of the following you want to restore:
Data (the text of all records). This box should always be checked.
Management Files (Index and Subset Files). These files will be rebuilt by the program if this box is not checked.
Linked Files. Check this box if you have linked note-taking files.
3Click OK.
4If the database is not already on your computer, the Restore As New Database dialog will open. Review the information that has been auto-filled, and edit if necessary. If you will continue to use the database on more than one computer, it is best to use the same short name, description, location and filename on both computers.
The Short Name is the name that the program will use to identify the database.
The Description is optional. It can be the same as the Short Name, or you can add a longer description.
The Database Folder is the location that will be used for the data and management files.
It is best to use the Filename that was used when the database was originally created, but you can use a new filename. The Filename must be not more than 8 letters with no spaces and no extension. You can use the Filename that is automatically filled in, or you can type in a different short name. Ibidem will use the filename you specify and create numerous files, each using the same filename with a different extension. The extensions are assigned by the program.
5Click GO.

If you are restoring an existing copy of a database with a newer copy of the same database, the name of both databases must be the same and you should be sure that you want to overwrite your existing database with the backup copy.

Warning: When you restore a database, you overwrite your existing database with a backup or second copy of the same database. You are essentially substituting the backup or second copy of your database for the primary copy on your computer. Information in your primary database will be lost if it is not also in the copy that you are restoring.
