Quotation Marks

 

Nota Bene automatically inserts smart quotes when the " key is pressed (with or without Shift).  Smart quotes curve in different directions depending on their relationship to the text.

    For example:  ‘xxx’ or “xxx”

 

To change the direction of a smart quote, press the " key a second time.

 

To insert straight quotes, press Alt + " for single quotes or Alt + Shift + " for double quotes.

    For example: 'xxx' or "xxx"  

 

To insert end quotes, you can either press the " key a second time or press Ctrl + " for single quotes or Ctrl + Shift + " for double quotes.

    For example: class of ’03

 

To insert begin quotes, you can either press the " key a second time or press Ctrl + ` for single quotes or Ctrl + Shift + ` for double quotes (using the ` or ~ key).

 

To insert "low 9" quotation marks (opening quotation marks as used in some European languages), press Ctrl + Alt + "  for  single quotes and Ctrl + Alt + Shift + "  for double quotes.

    For example: ‚xxx  or  „xxx  

 

To insert « or » (opening or closing quotation marks in some European languages), press F5 and then Shift + <  for opening quotes or F5 and then Shift + > for closing quotes.  Note that Nota Bene uses double angled brackets in Show Codes view to signify the beginning and end of embedded commands.  These command brackets are shown as green and red double angled brackets on a gray background. The characters inserted by the open and close single and double quote keys can be configured, thus serving needs of European users. Click Tools, Preferences, and double-click Quote Key Type. The Quote Key Type dialog can also be used to change the default setting so that straight quotation marks are used by default rather than smart quotes.  

 

NB:

If you want to change the default setting, so that Nota Bene does not automatically insert smart quotes, see Quotation mark default settings.

If you find that quotation marks are not displaying and printing properly, it may be because the font that you are using does not support smart quotes.  Try changing the font (for example from Courier to Courier New).
