Folder/File Structure

In version 12 and previous versions, Nota Bene was installed (by default) in the NBWIN folder on the C: drive with both program files and user files saved in the same NBWIN folder. With Nota Bene 13 and subsequent versions, there is now a new "Home Folder" installation. This installation is recommended on Windows and automatic on Macs. It provides a simpler way of organizing and accessing all of your work, with the concept of a “home” folder. With this installation, there are two distinct folder systems, the Program folder, and a new Home folder.

Program Folder: This folder contains all the program modules and configuration settings that are loaded/used/read, but never modified or written to by the user. The program folder is found under the standard "Program Files (x86)" folder in Windows or in the "Wine bottle" folder (pre-set location) on Macs.

Home Folder:  The home folder is the recommended parent folder for all files, databases, and settings that are updated/written to as you work in Nota Bene. The home folder can be a folder on your computer or it can be a sync folder in the cloud, which can be accessed from multiple computers. The default location for the home folder is C:\users\yourname\Nota Bene on Windows, or on the Mac, this will be Y:\Nota Bene (although Y = users\yourname). The files saved in the home folder include:

Files created by the user: Data created by the user including Nota Bene files, Ibidem databases, Orbis textbase management files. The home folder will be the default location for Ibidem database files or for Orbis textbase management files. These files as well as personal Nota Bene files can be saved in the home folder, or they can be saved anywhere. Many people prefer to save Nota Bene document files in the Windows or Mac Documents folder.
Configuration/user data files generated/updated by the program: These data filed include user dictionaries, expand/shorthand lists, visual appearance settings, Archiva temporary databases, and more. These files need to be in places known to the program.

This installation is the default. It is recommended for new users or for anyone who plans to use the cloud. If you have the traditional installation on your old computer (program installed in c:\nbwin), and want to continue to use this structure on the same computer or on a new new computer, you can select the Traditional (Legacy) Installation when you install.

To see which installation is active on your current computer, click File, File Options, Set Home folder, and make a note of the Home folder.

If it is C:\users\yourusername\Nota Bene then you are using the new Home Folder installation.

If it is C:\nbwin\users\default then you are using the traditional (legacy) installation.

It may also be a shared folder in a sync folder in the cloud.
