Chapter Numbering

Nota Bene has a special counter reserved for chapter numbering. If you use the counter rather than just typing in the chapter number, Nota Bene will automatically renumber chapters if you change the order of the chapters. It also allows you to use Nota Bene's cross reference feature to refer to chapter numbers.

To insert the chapter numbers:

1Move your cursor to the beginning of the first chapter and type in any text leading up to the chapter number. For example you may want to type the word "Chapter" followed by a space.  The chapter number will then be inserted where the cursor is.
2Click Insert, Numbered/Bulleted Item. The Insert Numbered/Bulleted Item dialog will appear on your screen.
3Select the Chapter radio button. If you want to use Arabic numbers starting with 1, click Insert.
4To select a different type of numbers or letters or a different starting number, click Set Format. The Number Start Position dialog will appear on your screen.
5Select the number start position and then click OK (usually you will want to set the format starting at the beginning of the document).
6Next, the Number Format dialog will appear on your screen. Complete the information as described below and then click OK.
Use the drop down lists to select the Number Style. You can use decimal numbers, upper or lower case roman numerals or upper or lower case letters.
Use the next control to select the Starting Number.
The other controls in this dialog are not active. The chapter number will use the same formatting as the text that precedes it and punctuation (if any) should be typed in before or after the chapter counter is inserted.
7The Insert Numbered Item dialog will reappear on your screen. Click Insert.
8Repeat steps 1 - 3 to insert subsequent chapter numbers. In step 3, the type of numbers or letters you previously selected and the starting number/letter (not the number/letter to be used next) should be shown in the Preview box at the bottom of the Insert Numbered/Bulleted Item dialog.

If you are writing a book or a dissertation with long chapters, you may want to work with each chapter as a separate document and then combine them using Nota Bene's Manuscript Files. See Manuscript Files.
