For an element in a manuscript or document to be listed in a table of contents, it must be marked for inclusion. Chapter headings and subsection headings from Nota Bene frameworks or academic styles are automatically marked for inclusion, so most of your marking work for the table of contents will already be done. However, for most manuscripts, you will also want things such as prefaces, bibliographies, indices, endnotes, bibliographies, etc. listed as well, and those need to be specifically marked by the user. You can also delete a table of contents marker or edit it and its content after it is placed in the text.
Adding a Marker
| 1 | Place your cursor at the point you want the table of contents marker to go (i.e. where the program will get the page reference for the table of contents). |
| 2 | Click Tools, Table of Contents, Mark or press Alt+C. |
| 3 | An arrow will appear in the document itself where the marker is going in. There are different setting that allow you to "customize" the entry:: |
| • | Select what kind of entry it is: Frontmatter, Chapter Level, Heading or Subheading (if it isn't one that is auto-marked by Nota Bene), Backmatter, or Part. |
| • | Select how much text will be included in the Table of Contents (the box with "To Next Paragraph End" in the example). You can also customize this by selecting "Other Text" and typing it in the box below. |
| • | Add any optional text you want to go with the entry. |
| 4 | Click Add when you have the settings as you want them. |
Editing or Deleting a Table of Contents Marker
Sometimes, you may want to change an aspect of a table of contents marker (e.g. the additional text) or just delete it altogether. While the markers don't show in graphics view, it is done easily enough.
| 1 | Place your cursor in the document just before or after where the marker is. |
| 2 | Click Tools, Table of Contents, Mark or press Alt+C. |
| 3 | An arrow will appear in the text. Click Next to advance to the marker if it is after the place where the arrow is, or Previous if it is before. (Note that only user-inserted markers can be edited in this fashion, not NB's auto-markers in frameworks and academic style manuals.) |
| 4 | If you are editing, make any changes by clicking the appropriate radio buttons or changing text. If you are deleting, you can skip this step. |
| 5 | Press Edit to make changes, or Delete to delete the marker. |
