Specialized Academic Features

Nota Bene was developed for scholarly writing and research. Some of the features that have been specialized for this purpose are as follows:

Academic Styles: Predefined academic style manual formats control page layout, heading format, note positioning, etc. in accord with major style manuals. A dialog guides you through the process of entering all of the necessary information (title of the paper, author's name, course information, etc.). See Academic Styles.

Manuscript Files: For those who are working on book-length manuscripts, Nota Bene manuscript files allow you to work on either individual chapters or a larger file comprised of all of the individual chapter files. See Manuscript Files.

Indexing: A powerful indexing program automates the process of generating an index. You can generate a single, simple index, or produce separate indexes for authors, places, subjects, titles, first lines, etc. You have numerous options for marking words for inclusion and for determining the format of the index that is ultimately generated. See Index and Table of Contents.

Outlines: Structured document outlines make working within an outline structure easy and quick. You can chose from several predefined outline formats or use a dialog box to guide you through the process of creating your own outline format. Outline points can be moved up or down with the click of a button. A special Outline View can be used to display all levels of the outline or only those levels you choose. See Frameworks and Outlines.

Frameworks: Nota Bene's outlining capabilities can be used for structured papers with several levels of headings and subheadings. Predefined document frameworks are available or you can create your own. Section headings and related text can be moved, promoted or demoted with the click of a button. For example, if you decide that your third major heading and related text should be a subsection under the first major heading, the change can be made almost instantly with headings and subheadings properly formatted and/or numbered. Outline View allows you to expand or contract the levels of headings shown and include or not include related text. See Frameworks and Outlines.

Footnotes/Endnotes: Up to three independent series of footnotes (or endnotes) can be included in each document. If you use Ibidem to create bibliographic citations and choose to display those citations in footnote format, Nota Bene will properly integrate bibliographic footnotes with footnotes that contain only text. Textual footnotes will remain and be renumbered if you change bibliographic citations from footnote format to in-text short form format. You can control the format of the footnotes, the numbering (or lettering) style, the appearance of the footnote separator (the line between the main body of the document and the footnotes) and more. See Footnotes.

Counters: Numbered lists can be inserted easily. Nota Bene gives the user control over choosing the counters to be used (decimal numbers, upper or lower case roman numerals, upper or lower case letters) and the punctuation and spacing before or after the counter. Nota Bene keeps track of the numbers and automatically renumbers the list if you add a new point or move text. Up to 4 numbered lists can be used concurrently (up to 15 under certain circumstances). Any number of independent numbered lists can be used consecutively by redefining the starting point. See Numbering.

Cross References: Bi-directional, real time cross referencing allows the user to label text and make reference to chapter numbers, section numbers, page numbers or footnote numbers where the labeled text appears. The referenced numbers will be updated automatically as and when changes in the document result in changes in the chapter numbers, section numbers, page numbers or footnote numbers. See Cross References.

Ibidem: Ibidem provides a fully integrated system for managing and storing bibliographic data and for entering citations into documents. Choose from hundreds of predefined academic styles to format in-text citations, footnotes or endnotes, reference lists and bibliographies. You can easily change the citations throughout your paper from one academic style to another, or from short form in-text citations to footnotes or endnotes. See Ibidem.

Orbis: Orbis provides immediate access to all documents written in Nota Bene or imported from an outside source. Search through thousands of pages of papers, letters, lecture notes, field notes, etc. for any word, phrase or combination of words. Orbis will display every paragraph (or sentence, page, document, etc.) containing the target word(s). Search results can be used for reference or imported into an open document. See Orbis.
