Quick View Dialog Bar (Alt+Q)

The Quick View Bar lets you display different elements of the current page or file on the side panel as you continue working in the main file. Among other things, you can display notes, annotations, cross-references, and bibliographic citations. The Quick View Bar lets you easily see the content of elements that are otherwise hidden from view, such as endnotes (since these only appear at the end of the document, rather than at the bottom of the page) or Orbis keyword markers.

To open the Quick View Dialog Bar, press Alt+Q.

Select an element: Use the dropdown list at the top to choose which element you wish to display (notes, annotations, etc.). The selected elements will be displayed. Use the second dropdown list to choose to have the selected elements on the page or in the whole file displayed. With the current page option selected, the dialog bar will be automatically updated. But if the whole file option is selected, it is not auto updated as you edit or move through the file, and manually updating of this display may take time on files with hundreds or thousands of the specified element. For these reasons, the whole file option may not be practical for a large file. You can also select an element by using the predefined Alt+Number (1 to 9, and 0) shortcuts for certain elements on the dropdown list. See Customize/configure below for more information.

Search: Enter search terms and use the forward or back arrow to find and highlight the next or previous term in the displayed element. Click to check the Auto box and then click the Update button to have NB automatically highlight all occurrences of the string in the displayed elements. Automatically highlighting all occurrences of the search string might cause a delay in updating the side panel, but it may work reasonably well if showing only elements on the current page.

Cursor: The cursor location relative to the displayed elements will be displayed by a small black box before, between, and/or after the selected element so that you can find your file location relative to the displayed elements.

Copy/paste: Click the Clipboard button to copy the contents of the Quick View Bar panel to the clipboard, from which you can paste it into another file for further viewing or printing.

Customize/configure: You can control how the Quick View item is displayed and updated by clicking on the screwdriver/wrench tool button. You can:

Specify when the content is updated: (a) only manually on Alt+Q; (b) on a mouse click; (c) when the displayed page changes; (d) automatically on a timer (the timer speed can be adjusted).
Configure the colors used to display the elements.
Include page and line numbers.
View and/or change keyboard shortcuts (Alt+ 1 to 9, and 0) that allow you to quickly select the elements you want to display. To set a new shortcut, type the number you wish to use in the small box at the top, click to select the element and then click Set New.

Note that while you can edit in the Quick View Bar, these edits will not be saved. You can however, copy edited text and paste it into the file.
