Nota Bene offers the user two options for the way selected (or highlighted or defined) text is treated. The Windows standard text definition option (the "transient" option) is the default. The Nota Bene text definition option (the "persistent" option) allows the user to move the cursor away from the defined block. This allows the user to copy or move text in one step without using the Windows standard two-step process of copying to the clipboard and then to the file.
The method of defining text is the same for either text definition option. See Define text.
With either selection option, selected text can be copied or moved using the following keyboard shortcuts:
| • | Ctrl+C copies the selected text to the clipboard. |
| • | Ctrl+X deletes the selected text from the file and copies it to the clipboard. |
| • | Ctrl+V inserts the text that was most recently copied to the clipboard in an open file at the point of the cursor. |
With the Nota Bene text definition option (the "persistent" option), the following additional keyboard shortcuts are active:
| • | Ctrl+Y copies the selected text to the cursor position (the equivalent of using Ctrl+C and then Ctrl+V). |
| • | Ctrl+M moves the selected text to the cursor position (the equivalent of using Ctrl+X and then Ctrl+V). |
Other differences between the two selection options are as follows:
Windows style "transient" selection:
| • | Selections are cleared when the cursor is moved. |
| • | Selections are replaced (deleted) by any character you type. |
| • | Selections can be deleted using Ctrl+X, the Delete key or the Backspace key. |
Nota Bene style "persistent" selection:
| • | Selections persist even if the cursor is moved. To clear a selection, press Esc. |
| • | Characters typed while a selection is active are inserted into the file at the cursor position, without clearing the selection. |
| • | Selections can be deleted using Ctrl+X. The Delete key (or the Backspace key) will delete the character after (or before) the cursor. |
