Nota Bene can automatically number pages. Like any numbering, page numbering is a two step process. First, you define the starting point and the style to be used. Then you insert the page numbers. Inserting the page numbers is typically done as part of a running header or footer so that the page number will be automatically inserted on each page. If you wish to use decimal numbers (1, 2, 3...) starting with 1, you can skip Step 1 below.
The SP (Set Page Number) command defines the starting point and the numbering style (i.e., 1,2,3 or i, ii, iii... ). The PN (Page Number) command inserts the page number into the text. The FP (Final Page) command inserts the number of the last page -- useful for a "Page 5 of 7" format. To number the pages automatically, insert the PN command in a running header or footer.
Step 1: Define the starting point and numbering style
| 1 | Move the cursor to the top of the first page you want to number, before any text or commands. |
| 2 | Press F9 to access the action line. |
| 3 | Type SP n where n = the starting page number and style. There are five different styles from which you can choose listed below. For any of these styles, you can specify a different starting page. For example, SP 25 would number pages beginning with the current page as page 25. You cannot include punctuation in the SP command. |
| • | SP I Uppercase Roman numerals |
| • | SP i Lowercase Roman numerals |
| 4 | Press F10 to define the starting point, starting page number and style. |
Step 2: Insert page number counters in a running header of footer
| 2 | Place the cursor in the header or footer window at the point where you want to insert the page number. |
| 3 | Press F9 to access the action line |
| 5 | Press F10 to insert the page number. |
| 6 | Type in and format any other text you want in the header or footer including punctuation before or after the page number. When you are finished, press F3 to close the Header/Footer window (or click on the Save & Close icon at the top right corner of the Header/Footer window). Nota Bene will insert the header (or footer) at the top (or bottom) of each page and the pages will be consecutively numbered. |
NB:
| • | The PN command can be inserted directly in the text rather than in a running header or footer. In this case, it displays the current page number just once, at the point of the cursor. |
| • | The PN command can be used with the final page command (FP) to create page numbering in the format of "page 3 of 7." To do this, open the header or footer window and position the cursor within the window. Type page, insert the PN command, type of, and then insert the FP command. Nota Bene will automatically insert the number of pages in the document as the final page number. |
| • | Similarly, the PN command can be used with the chapter counter (c0) to create chapter and page numbering (e.g. II-4 to indicate the fourth page of the second chapter). |
