Numbering and Cross References Overview

Nota Bene's numbering system, described in this section, lets you number your document in virtually any format found in print.  You can number chapters, paragraphs, sections, lists, outlines, lines, and pages, and the program will automatically renumber as necessary when you add, delete or move text.

Nota Bene has 15 independent counters: C0 through C14. C0 is reserved for numbering chapters, C1 - C7 are used in document frameworks, and C8, C9 and C10 are used for numbering tables, figures and appendices.  C11, C12, C13 and C14 are intended for general use. These general use counters are also called List 1 (counter C11), List 2 (counter C12), List 3 (counter C13) and List 4 (counter C14).

If you insert the C11 or List 1 counter at several places in your document, you will see the number 1 at the first occurrence of the counter, the number 2 at the second occurrence, etc. If the counters marker is active, you will see a small red diamond on top of each number. This is a non-printing marker that is used to distinguish a counter in the document from a number that you typed. In Codes view, you will see «C11» rather than a number. If you add a counter or delete or move text including the counter, the program will take care of properly renumbering. This happens automatically when you move, delete or add counters; you do not need to refresh or otherwise prompt the program to renumber.

Unlike some other word processors, Nota Bene does not attempt to guess when and where you want to add a counter. If you have three lines that begin with counters, Nota Bene will not assume that you want the next line to begin with a counter. Instead, you insert a counter by clicking a button at the top of the screen or by using a simple key combination (Shift+Alt+F1 for List 1).

By default the general use counters are formatted as decimal numbers (1, 2, 3 ...). However, you can choose to have the counters formatted as upper or lower case roman numerals (I, II, III or i, ii, iii), letters (A, B, C or a, b, c), or a variety of different bullets.  Styles can be defined that add text or punctuation including spaces or tabs before or after the counter.

You also can create references within your text, such as "See page 52" or  "Refer to Graph 6, Chapter 3, p. 112."  You insert a non-printing label in the text, for example at the beginning of a paragraph. Then you insert a cross reference that specifies the page number or the chapter number or the counter number where the label appears. Nota Bene takes care of knowing whether the label is on page 52 or page 53 and it displays and prints the correct number.
