Adding Citations to Note-Taking File

As you are taking your notes in a note-taking file, it is important to keep track of page numbers associated with any quotation or summary, so that the material can be properly attributed in any papers you write. Note-taking files are set up so that you can enter a short-form citation showing only the author's name and page number(s). If you later copy the material, including the citation, into a paper you are writing, the citation will be automatically converted to the format you are using for the paper when you update the dynamic citations in the document.

To tag a paragraph with a page number, place the cursor where you want the citation to appear, and press Ctrl+Ins (or right-click and choose Cite Page Number). Enter the page number in the space provided and click OK. A short form citation with author and page number will be inserted with the author's name and the page number(s).

You can also tag a paragraph by opening Ibidem and entering the page number(s) in the Quick Cite Bar at the top right of the Ibidem screen.

The page numbers should be added within the paragraph to which they pertain, not on the lines before or after the paragraph. That way the citations will be retrieved with the paragraph if/when you use Orbis to search your reading notes.

When you are writing a paper, the text with the short form citation can be copied to your paper, either by copying and pasting or by inserting text retrieved in an Orbis search directly from the Orbis screen. The short form citation in your note-taking file is linked to the Ibidem record, so if it is copied to a document that uses footnotes or endnote, the citation will be converted to the format defined for your paper and the work will be included in the reference list.
