Archiva: ISBN Numbers

The International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is a 10-digit number that uniquely identifies books and book-like products. ISBN numbers are not generally assigned to journal articles or chapters in a book, and certainly not to unpublished works. The functions in Archiva Pro that use ISBN numbers are for books and other records that have ISBNs, not for journal articles and records that do not have ISBNs.

ISBN numbers are used in Archiva Premium to enable you to go directly from an Ibidem record to the corresponding record at Library of Congress, WorldCat, Google Books, or Amazon. You can also find an ISBN for a record in your Ibidem database by clicking Link, Update ISBN's.

General notes about ISBN numbers

ISBN numbers differ from hardback to paperback versions, and there is no rule-generated link between the two. Ibidem has three ISBN fields for ISBN numbers.

IS        ISBN/ISSN--the main field
IC        Cloth ISBN--for cloth/hardback
IP        Paper ISBN--for paperback

IS is the main field. It is where Update ISBN's puts in the ISBN number (it doesn't know if it is cloth or paper). If you manually find ISBN's, and know that it is paper or cloth, you can put one or both in the IC or IP fields. In most cases, you should also put the IC ISBN into the IS field as well

Update ISBNs

You can find an ISBN for a record in your Ibidem database by going to that record and clicking Link, Update ISBN's. The Update ISBN function will also be run (after prompting) if there is no ISBN in the IS field of an Ibidem record, and you attempt to use the Links menu to go from that record to the Library of Congress, WorldCat, Google Books or Amazon record.

Update ISBN's works as follows. Archiva does a search in the Library of Congress for author last name + title; if it finds an ISBN, it inserts it into the IS field. Note that the Library of Congress usually has only ISBN numbers of cloth works, so it will return that number. It tells you the results (i.e, shows the number, if there is one), and asks if you want to accept the ISBN number. In some cases, more than one ISBN will be found. In this case, you can examine the results either accept the suggested ISBN or copy and paste a different ISBN into the IS field. If you choose to accept the ISBN, Archiva will add it to the IS field. If the ISBN is not found, Archiva will ask whether you want to go to Amazon to manually search for it. If you do this and find the ISBN, then you highlight and copy it, and then return to Ibidem to paste it into the correct field.

Look up based on ISBN numbers

Archiva looks up records in Library of Congress, WorldCat, Google Books or Amazon record. based on ISBN numbers (from the Ibidem Links menu). When looking up a record, if the IS field has data, Archiva uses that ISBN number. Otherwise, it first tries the IC (cloth ISBN) field (if it has data). If that doesn't work (and you look up the same record, without looking up any other record in between), it next tries the IP (paper ISBN) field. Archiva does not get feedback from the browser, so it doesn't know if the proper page is shown. This mean that Archiva doesn't know (e.g.) that a first lookup (IC) doesn't find something, but the second (IP) does. It also means that if the first lookup (for the cloth volume) fails, but the second one (for the paper volume) works, another lookup (without looking up another record in between) will again go to one that fails (the cloth). The solution is to add the correct ISBN (whatever it is) to the IS field (duplicating the data from the appropriate IC/IP field).
