Characters in the International Phonetic Alphabet can be entered in any of the following ways:

Method I: Transform a Roman-alphabet letter

1Type any letter.
2Press F6. A pop-up screen will appear.
3Hold down the Alt key. All of the alternate forms of the letter will appear on the pop-up screen.
4Transform the letter typed in step one to one of the alternate forms by continuing to hold down the Alt key while you either double-click on the character you choose or type the letter in the yellow box that is associated with the character you choose.

Method II: Insert from Lingua Character Inventory

1Place your cursor at the point in the document where you want to insert the character.
2Click Insert, Characters from Inventory or press Alt+Shift+F5 to open the Character Inventory dialog
3In the Character Groups window at the top left, click to highlight Phonetic Letters & Symbols.
4Click one of the radio buttons in the Subgroups box, and look for the character you want to insert in the main window on the right side of the dialog.
5Insert the character by double-clicking on it or by typing the letter in the yellow box that is associated with the character you choose.

Method III: Develop your own keyboard of user-assigned characters

You can assign characters to keys and then insert them by pressing Alt+F5 and then selecting the character to be inserted. Composed characters (multiple characters or characters with diacritics added) can also be assigned to a key on your Alt+F5 keyboard, thus enabling you to insert the character easily. For more information, see User-Assigned Characters.
