Characters in the International Phonetic Alphabet can be entered in any of the following ways:
Method I: Transform a Roman-alphabet letter
| 2 | Press F6. A pop-up screen will appear. |
| 3 | Hold down the Alt key. All of the alternate forms of the letter will appear on the pop-up screen. |
| 4 | Transform the letter typed in step one to one of the alternate forms by continuing to hold down the Alt key while you either double-click on the character you choose or type the letter in the yellow box that is associated with the character you choose. |
Method II: Insert from Lingua Character Inventory
| 1 | Place your cursor at the point in the document where you want to insert the character. |
| 2 | Click Insert, Characters from Inventory or press Alt+Shift+F5 to open the Character Inventory dialog |
| 3 | In the Character Groups window at the top left, click to highlight Phonetic Letters & Symbols. |
| 4 | Click one of the radio buttons in the Subgroups box, and look for the character you want to insert in the main window on the right side of the dialog. |
| 5 | Insert the character by double-clicking on it or by typing the letter in the yellow box that is associated with the character you choose. |
Method III: Develop your own keyboard of user-assigned characters
You can assign characters to keys and then insert them by pressing Alt+F5 and then selecting the character to be inserted. Composed characters (multiple characters or characters with diacritics added) can also be assigned to a key on your Alt+F5 keyboard, thus enabling you to insert the character easily.
