User-Assigned Characters

 

The Lingua character inventory can be used to select or compose a character (or a set of characters) and assign it to a key selected by the user. The character can then be entered by pressing Alt+F5.and then pressing the key that was previously selected for the character.

 

To assign a character to a key for future use:

 

1Click Insert, Characters from Inventory or press Alt+Shift+F5 to open the Lingua Character Inventory.
2Use the Character Inventory dialog to select the character to be assigned.
3Click the Assign Alt button. The Assign Special Character dialog will display.
4The character can be assigned to any position on the keyboard. For each key, the lower position is unshifted and the upper position is for use with the Shift key.  Positions that also use the Control and Alt keys are available by clicking the tabs on the top of the dialog. Click on the position of your choice and then click the Assign New button.

 

Once a key has been assigned, the user-assigned keyboard can be viewed and the character (or set of characters) can be inserted in an open document as follows:

 

1Place your cursor at the point in the document where you want to insert the character.
2Click Insert, User-Assigned Characters or press Alt+F5.
3Click the character you want to insert and click the Insert button or type the letter on the keyboard that corresponds to the character that you want to insert (use Shift, Ctrl or Alt, if applicable).

 

To compose a character or a set of characters and assign it to a key:

 

1Select the first character and assign it to a key as described above.
2Select the next character or accent to be added to the first character.
3Click the Assign Alt button. The Assign Special Character dialog will display.
4Click the same position as the position you chose for the first character in step 1.  
5Click the Add to Existing button.  Nota Bene will add the character or accent that you selected in step 2 to the character you selected in step 1, assigning the composed character(s) to the same key.
6Repeat steps 2 - 5, adding as many characters and/or accents as you want.
7To review the composed character or set of characters assigned to a key, click Insert, User Defined Characters or press Alt+F5.
