Information for Mac Users

Nota Bene runs on Macs with Intel and M1 chips, running the lastest Mac OS, Ventura, as well as any version starting with High Sierra (10.13), including Mojave, Catalina, Big Sur, and Monterey.

The Mac version comes with a bundled version of Crossover, a program that lets Windows programs run on the Mac. Nota Bene on the Mac is a single installation that both installs, and then runs, like other Mac applications, using the Finder dialog for all file management, and taking full advantage of Retina displays.

Some NB users have asked us if we intend to produce a native Mac version. The cost to develop a native Mac version of Nota Bene would be prohibitively expensive. Also, we have heard Mac users complain that newly developed native Mac versions of other programs are often limited in very significant ways. Given the cost of developing an entirely new version of a program that was originally developed for Windows, it is understandable that a new Mac version would not be as robust or full-featured. The current Nota Bene has been developed over more than 3 decades, first as a DOS program and then as a Windows program. So we believe that the best way to make the full functionality of Nota Bene available to Mac users is to use a “bottled” version of Crossover behind the scenes. With our NB + Crossover version, you get the full power of Nota Bene on the Mac.
