Marking Using the Index Mark Dialog Bar

The Index Marking toolbar can be opened by clicking Tools, Page Indexes, Mark, or by pressing Alt+X.  This toolbar can be used to mark a file or to search for marked terms. For detailed directions, see the following:

The Index: Mark Toolbar has some special features and three different modes, which are discussed below.

Always On Top

The Index Marking toolbar is "always on top" meaning that it remains open and on top of your document until you close it by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F8 again or clicking the [x] in the upper right hand corner of the dialog.

While the Mark for Index dialog is open, you can click on your document to return to it for editing.  Pressing Ctrl+Alt+F8 will toggle your cursor between the dialog and the document.

To prevent this "always on top" dialog from obscuring portions of the document underneath, it has been designed so that it can, in most cases, fit in the left margin of the paper (assuming 100% zoom and a standard margin of at least 1 inch).  Once you are familiar with its functionality, either move the dialog so its left half (which offers descriptive help, but no additional functionality) is off the screen to the left, or go to "Expert" mode (described below).  You can also set NB to a non-maximized mode (where it doesn't take up the full screen) and drag the marking dialog to an area outside of the NB window.

Marking Modes

The Index Marking toolbar has three different modes: Standard, Enhanced, and Expert. Whenever the Toolbar is active, you can switch to a different mode by clicking on the Toolbar Display Views dropdown list and selecting the mode you want.

Standard mode: This is similar to the basic marking described elsewhere, except that you can specify phrases rather than just words, and multiple levels (headings, subheadings, and sub-subheadings).

Enhanced mode: All the index marking options are available. An additional "auto marking" feature is available (this adds the word to the auto-mark file).  You can search through the file to find other occurrences of text to be indexed, or terms that are already marked (also described below).  Descriptive help for the various enhanced options is also available in this mode.

Expert mode: All the same functions as Enhanced mode, but by removing the option to display help, the dialog is narrower and less obtrusive.
