Index Generation Overview

After the file is marked, an index can be generated. NB will create a separate file that can be edited just like any Nota Bene file. Note that the index file itself is not "dynamic" in the way that certain parts of the program are (e.g., framework components and Ibidem citations), so if you make changes to the text after generating the index, those changes won't be reflected in the index unless you generate a new one.

After marking a file, a simple index can be generated as follows:

1 Click Tools, Page Indexes, Generate.
2 Select the index you want to generate from the Existing Index Definitions list. Usually, this will just be General Index.
3 Click Generate.

If you are producing just one general index for the whole manuscript, in most cases this should be enough. That is, you can use the General Index from the Existing Index Definitions list. An index definition is the set of rules that govern the format and layout of the index. General Index is the definition that includes all of NB's default settings. However, before generating you can change virtually any aspect of the resulting index using New or Edit from the Index: Generate dialog.
