Document Statistics

Nota Bene maintains statistics for each document including the size of the document, and the number of characters, words and pages in the document. The information in this dialog can be used to supply your publisher with a word count (typically required by American publishers) or a character count (typically required by European publishers).

To display the document statistics for an open file, click File, Document Statistics (or press Ctrl+Alt+?). The Document Statistics dialog will open and the following will be displayed:

At cursor / Total: Numbers in the At Cursor column apply to the portion of the text before the cursor. Numbers in the Total column apply to the total for the document.

File size (char): File size is the number of characters including commands (commands as seen in Show Codes view) as well as spaces and punctuation.

Character Count: To obtain an accurate count of the number of characters in the document, click the Character Count button. This character count includes spaces and punctuation, but does not include commands, headers, footers or non-printing annotations. The character count for the body and for the notes will be listed separately.

Words: The number of words are listed separately for the body, the notes (footnotes and/or endnotes) and the reference list. Totals are also given. Words in any headers, footers or non-printing annotations are not included in any of the word counts.

Pages: The number of pages in the document are shown.

To display the document statistics for block of text, select the block and then click File, Document Statistics.
