Border Commands

The border command allows you to put a border around a framed area created with the FA (Framed Area) command or around an entire page or a header, footer or footnote. To place a border around a framed area, the BO (Border) command must be placed in the document before the FA command.

When you define a border, you can use a keyword as the border name or you can give it a custom name.  The type of border name you use affects the way that you apply borders: if the name is a keyword, the border is applied the border to all page elements that correspond to that keyword; if the name is a custom one, you can use either the UB (Use Border) or UP (Use Page Border) command to apply it.

UB applies the named border to all table cells, reserved areas, and snaked columns.  It overrides any borders that were defined with keywords. UP tells Nota Bene to insert the border around the page; it does not override borders that were defined with keywords.

The UP and UB commands can also be used to turn off borders:

UP NO turns off page borders

UB NO turns off all borders

UB ST turns off custom borders and turns on standard borders

To create a border:

1Move the cursor to the beginning of the file (Press Ctrl+Home)
2Press F9 to access the action line
3Type BO LB=name,WT=l,r,t,b,IS=x,RS=l,r,t,b
LB=name sets the border name or label.  It can be a name you select or you can use the keyword FA (framed area) as the name if you want to draw a border around a framed area.  A border name or label can only be used once in a file.
WT=l,r,t,b is the line weight or thickness (l,r,t,b=left, right, top, and bottom borders).  Example: WT=1pt,1pt,3pt,3pt would define the thickness of the left and right borders as 1 point and the top and bottom as 3 points.

The following are optional:

IN=l,r,t,b is the amount of inset or space around the outside of the border, measured in deci inches (1/10 of an inch). The default is 0.  This is used for page and framed area borders.
IS=x is the percentage of black or shading you want inside the border.  The default is 0 or no shading; 100 is solid black.
RS=l,r,t,b is the percentage of black or shading of the border itself.  The default is 100 or solid black; 0 is invisible.
4Press F10 to create the border.

NB:

The PW (page width) is the value used for the right boundary of page borders.
The ET (element top) and EE (element end) commands are used to insert white space between the top and bottom borders and the text of a cell, column or frame.
The UB command can be inserted into other formatting commands.  For example a border can be placed around a running header, footer or a footnote.  Border commands can also be inserted into an FA command so that it only applies to one framed area and not all framed areas.  The rule applies only to formatting commands that open a command window so you can insert other commands.
If you are creating a border around a cellular table, the name of the border must be CT.
