Akkadian

For information on selecting the Akkadian alphabet, see Extended Alphabets.

There are 6 full fonts of Akkadian characters; NB switches between them seamlessly (there are no change-of-font codes in the file).  The Akkadian supplement contains all the basic Akkadian signs (the standard Neo-Assyrian signs) listed in Rykle Borger's Assyrisch-babylonische Zeichenliste (AOAT 33, 1978, editions 2-4 with Supplement 33A) and René Labat's Manuel d'épigraphie akkadienne (5th edition, 1976).  These fonts have been revised and expanded to be equivalent to Dr. Borger's new (1988) sign list.

Two special Akkadian keys are available on Akkadian keyboards:

Ctrl+Shift+/  opens the Akkadian Character Input dialog of all words/values or numbers to which Akkadian glyphs have been linked. The numbers are from Rykle Borger's list. You can sort the list by word/value or by number. You can search the list by word/value or by number.
/  (Unshifted)  takes the word/value or number before the cursor, looks it up in Akkadian Character Input, and converts it (where possible) to Akkadian character. If you want to insert the / character from Akkadian keyboards, use F5, then Shift+\

Note that you will initially probably need to use Ctrl+Shift+/  to enter the glyphs until you learn their transliteration value or number; however, once you do so, you can simply type them in the file, and then have them converted to the Akkadian glyph by pressing the / key. Both functions should work in regular documents, in Ibidem record view, and for searching in Nota Bene, Ibidem and Orbis, among other contexts.

Two Akkadian keyboard layouts are provided, both with the two special Akkadian keys assigned (as noted above).

AKKADN-E.KBD -- Akkadian (English): Akkadian keyboard with all keys set to type English.
AKKADN-T.KBD -- Akkadian (Translitteration): Akkadian keyboard designed to type in transliteration (e.g., x/X enters s*/S*)

The key assignments can be seen using Ctrl+Shift+K  to display the keyboard diagram. Keyboards are selected by clicking Tools, Keyboards, Select, and then choosing Akkadian alphabet.

The F6 compose key offers the following options in Akkadian:

There are two different width erasure characters (narrow and wide). These can be positioned at three different horizontal positions:
Aligned left on underlying glyph
Centered on underlying glyph
Aligned right on underlying glyph
There are two different height erasure characters (half height and full height). The half height can be positioned:
At top third
At middle third
At bottom third
Crosses and various special brackets can be entered with Shift. Press F6 and then hold down the Shift button to see the options.

In using the F6 key for erasure characters, please note the following:

All erasures are entered after the character that they erase.
You can combine multiple erasures to erase the desired parts.
You must select which erasures you want to use for a particular instance of a glyph.
Very wide characters (with erasure) cannot be properly displayed in the F6 dialog. The key to use for the desired erasure is the same regardless of the width of the glyph being erased, although the F6 dialog cannot properly show which portion will be erased when the character is too wide to fit.
