| NOTA BENE NEWS In our last newsletter, we provided some tips for moving your files and Ibidem database(s) to a new computer. Getting Orbis set up on your new computer is even easier. The new Nota Bene 14 Orbis provides you with two options for searchable textbases. Here's how to set them up on your new computer: Automatic textbases will be automatically created in popup Orbis on the new system. There is no need for you to do anything at all! As soon as you install Nota Bene and copy files to your new computer, you will be able to begin using automatic textbases for searching your files. User-defined textbases give you more control over which folders/files you want to search. These textbases will need to be recreated on the new computer since the files have been moved. With Nota Bene 14, the process of creating a user-defined textbase is easier and more intuitive, and the indexing extremely fast (over 30 times faster than in earlier versions). Getting your textbase(s) ready for searching on your new computer should take just a few minutes. For instructions, open Nota Bene Help and see Orbis > Textbase Creation > New Textbase. Orbis is viewed by many—and especially by Nota Bene developer Steve Siebert—as the heart and soul of Nota Bene. This remarkable tool keeps all of your NB documents at your fingertips, available for your review and for incorporating text in your open document (with Ibidem-linked citation, if any). If you have Orbis+, you can include DOC, DOCX, PDF and RTF files in your searches as well as NB files. Just select a textbase (a set of files to be searched) and enter your search terms. Text will be retrieved and displayed in a convenient table format that lets you review text without even opening the source files. The new Nota Bene 14 includes game-changing improvements to Orbis. There are lots of reasons for upgrading to Nota Bene 14, but the Orbis improvements are right at the top of the “must have” list. Textbases can now be created automatically so you can do Orbis searches without creating your own textbase. Or you can define your own textbases using a much improved textbase-creation dialog. And a brand new pop-up Orbis places this powerful search engine right next to the document you are working on. And that's not all! The re-imagined Orbis offers a plethora of new conveniences that can expand your research options while simplfying your work life. We continue to make improvements to Nota Bene as part of our commitment to providing unmatched customer service. The latest release is 14.0.20. Those who have NB 14 installed should be prompted to install this update after you exit and restart Nota Bene twice. Or registered NB 14 users can pick up the full program, version 14.0.20, by clicking the login button on the Nota Bene web site then clicking the Previous Orders/Downloads button. Check which version you are using by clicking Help, About Nota Bene (when running Nota Bene). While NB 14 runs on Apple's latest operating system, Sonoma, it turns out that it does not directly print NB files! The problem is actually more general than that — Sonoma does not support printing on any Wine application, and introduces other printing issues in other contexts (see, for example, here, here, and here). In the latest 14.0.20 build announced above, we introduced a simple alternative, automatically generating a PDF file that could be printed outside of Nota Bene. Initial reports are that this works well. But more user-specific testing is needed, and our advice in the meantime is that if you have not yet upgraded to Sonoma, don't do so yet. (That's the advice in general for new Mac OS releases — it's best to wait, since they often introduce surprising changes, such as this decision to stop supporting printer functions that have worked for decades.) As those of us in the United States celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday this week, we are thankful for Nota Bene users in the US and for Nota Bene users throughout the world. What a wonderful and diverse community of scholars! Officially, we will be closed on Thursday and Friday this week. But if you have an urgent issue, send an email, and we will do our best to respond. Any backlog of less pressing ones will be addressed in the first few days of next week. Happy Thanksgiving to all! Best wishes from all of us at Nota Bene.
