NB Tips: Installing on a New Computer

Getting a new computer and want to continue your Nota Bene work on it? It's easy. Start by going to the Nota Bene web page and logging in. After doing so:
  • Those already using the current Nota Bene 14 can simply click Previous Orders/Downloads to get the latest release (NB14.0.19)
  • Those using earlier versions can upgrade at the upgrade prices shown
Once you have the latest version, you are ready to install, selecting one of two options:
  • Home Folder Installation
The Home Folder installation—which follows the accepted practice of keeping program files and user files in separate folders—is the default when installing on a new computer. The home Nota Bene folder is used for your personal files and databases and it can be a local folder on your computer (usually under your computer's main user folder [for example, users\YOU]) or in a folder shared in the cloud. To migrate to this new system:
    1. Install Nota Bene on your new computer
    2. If you have Ibidem databases, return to your original computer, and make a backup copy of your Ibidem database (an NBB file) by opening the database and then clicking File, Backup Database
    3. Then copy your all your NB files (including any NBB database archive) to the desired location(s) on the new computer. (See the Setup Options page or open NB Help, and see Backup and Sharing Files > Transfer to New Computer, for further details)

  • Legacy Installation (only on Windows; unnecessary on Macs)
If you have the traditional installation on your old computer (program installed in c:\nbwin), and want to continue to use this structure on your new computer, you can do so as follows:
    1. Transfer your files to the new computer by copying your nbwin folder to your new computer (this will put your files, databases, and default settings in the right place)
    2. After doing so, double-click on the setup file that you downloaded, choose the traditional (legacy) option, and install in c:\nbwin
    3. If you have files saved in folders other than nbwin, you will need to copy those to your new computer
The traditional nbwin installation makes it a little easier to transfer your files and database (if they are all in nbwin), but it isn't as flexible and powerful as the new structure (and only the latter lets you share files in folders synced in the cloud).

Nota Bene Authors

Nota Bene is used by a wide variety of scholars in many fields. We are delighted to congratulate two Nota Bene users who started using the program when it was a DOS program! That's back in the 1980's! They've been with NB through lots of changes.

Paul Scotton

Congratulations to NB author Paul Scotton on the publication of The Julian Basilica: Architecture, Sculpture, Epigraphy (Princeton: American School of Classical Studies at Athens, 2022), co-authored with Catherine de Grazia Vanderpool and Carolynn Roncaglia.

Professor Scotton is Professor of Classical Archaeology and Classics at California State University Long Beach and Co-Director, Lechaion Harbor and Settlement Land Project, Corinthia, Greece.

His part of the book was written in Nota Bene and the final manuscript was converted to Word for the publisher. He has been a devoted user of Nota Bene for 37 years (!!!) and he says that Nota Bene was a great help in writing this book.

Andie Tucher

Congratulations to Andie Tucher on the publication of Not Exactly Lying: Fake News and Fake Journalism in American History (Columbia University Press, 2022).

Professor Tucher is H. Gordon Garbedian Professor of Journalism and Director of Communications Ph.D. Program at Columbia Journalism School. When Professor Tucher saw this section of the newsletter she had this to say:

“Actually my experience was like Scotton's — I wrote the ms. with Nota Bene but converted to Word for the publisher. I've also used NB since the mid 1980's. I splurged on the software when I was a graduate student starting my dissertation and have been happy to stick with it even as the rest of the world got Word-ier and Word-ier.”
