Information for XyWrite Users

Like XyWrite, Nota Bene is designed to provide fast and efficient keyboard control. An action line and numerous keyboard shortcuts are designed to provide this control, and a menu interface is also available. Nota Bene uses a standard keyboard that is different than the XyWrite keyboard. As a XyWrite user, you can adapt to the Nota Bene keyboard, or, if you prefer, an optional XyWrite keyboard is provided.

Virtually all of the commands in Nota Bene are the same as commands used in XyWrite. In general, you will not need to learn new commands. The function keys used to access the action line and implement the commands are different. If you are using the standard Nota Bene keyboard, F9 will take you to the action line (comparable to F5 in XyWrite) and F10 will implement the command (comparable to F9 in XyWrite). Otherwise, the use of the action line is the same in Nota Bene as it is in XyWrite.

Since the Nota Bene and XyWrite keyboards are different, the keyboard shortcuts in Nota Bene are different from the keyboard shortcuts in XyWrite. If you are using the standard Nota Bene keyboard, keyboard shortcuts are described throughout the Nota Bene Help system and a chart containing all of the Nota Bene key assignments is available in the Nbkey.nb file. To view this chart, open Nota Bene and click Help, Key Charts.

If you prefer to use the the familiar XyWrite key combinations, a XyWrite keyboard is available. Since Nota Bene Help is written for the Nota Bene keyboard, the keyboard shortcuts described in Help will generally not apply to the XyWrite keyboard.

If you would like to use the XyWrite keyboard, it can be loaded as follows:

1Click Tools, Keyboards, Select. The Select Keyboard Layout dialog will appear on your screen.
2Click XyWrite Standard and then click the Select button.
3The message about non-English keyboards will appear on your screen. This is not relevant unless you are also loading a language other than United States English. Click OK.
4The XyWrite keyboard will be active.

If you want to use the XyWrite keyboard in another language, select XyWrite as the base keyboard when you install the language keyboard. In this case, you must also install the same language keyboard in Windows. See Alternate keyboards.
