Line Numbering

You can automatically number the lines in your document, with numbers appearing in the margin. The Automatic Line Numbering dialog is accessible through the Insert menu and it gives you numerous options to customize the appearance of the numbers.

The LN command is used for line numbering. However, the variables after the LN command are complex and it is therefore recommended that you use the menu rather than the action line for line numbering.

To add automatic line numbering:

1Click Insert, Automatic Line Numbering to open the Automatic Line Numbering dialog.
2Click OK to accept the default settings and add line numbering to your document, or change the settings as follows:
Use the drop down list at the top of the dialog to choose where the line numbering will start
In the box labeled "Starting from," choose "Left Edge of Page" if you want the line numbers to appear in the left margin and  choose "Right Edge of Page" if you want the line numbers to appear in the right margin. Make separate selections for even and odd pages.
Select the distance from the edge of the page. The units used are tenths of an inch (decipoints or di). Make separate selections for even and odd pages.
Choose how the numbers will be aligned. The dialog illustrates the difference between "left align to right" and "right align to left." Make separate selections for even and odd pages.
Select the number format: arabic numbers, upper or lower case roman numerals, or upper or lower case letters.
Select the starting number.
Click to check or clear the "Restart on Every Page" box.
Select how frequently you want the number to appear (1 for every line, 2 for every other line, 3 for every third line, etc.)
Click to check or clear the "Always Print Number on First Line" box. With this box checked, the first line will be numbered in addition to the lines specified in the "Number Every ___Lines" box.
Click the Font button at the bottom left and use the Font dialog to change the font, font size or mode (bold, italic, etc.) of the line numbers.
3When all of the adjustments have been made, click OK to add automatic line numbering to your document.

To change or turn off line numbering that has previously been inserted, follow the above instructions. When line numbering has previously been inserted, options to edit or turn off line numbering will be active in addition to those described above.
