The compose key (F6) can be used to add accents to letters. To use the compose key with a letter, type the letter, press F6, find the accented letter that you would like to insert and double-click or type the letter in the small yellow box corresponding to the character that you want to enter. For more detailed instructions, see Compose key)
If you have the Lingua module, you will have more options. With Lingua, the compose key is used with letters in the Roman and Cyrillic alphabets as follows:
| • | add one or more accents or marks above, below or through a letter |
| • | transform a letter into a different form of the same character (e.g., small cap or rotated) |
| • | transform a letter into a related character (e.g. transform a b into a beta or a hooktop b) |
In general, when you type a Roman or Cyrillic letter and then press F6, the F6 pop-up screen will have the following characteristics:
| • | The first screen shows the letter with accents above the letter |
| • | The Shift screen shows the letter with the same accents below the letter |
| • | The Ctrl screen shows the letter with different accents above and/or through the letter |
| • | The Ctrl+Shift screen shows the letter with different accents below and/or through the letter |
| • | The Alt screen shows alternate forms of the letter including small caps, superscript, subscript, rotated (180%), Greek and other forms of the letter. |
| • | The Ctrl+Alt screen shows the letter with accents above the letter |
| • | The letters in the two gray boxes at the bottom right corner of the first screen and the Shift screen show constant height ring or dot above or below a character (for example, as used to indicate conjectural readings in manuscripts) |
