Accented Letters (Ctrl+Alt)

 

All of the accented letters, ligatures and a few other characters in the Roman alphabet have been assigned positions on the keyboard and can be inserted from the Insert menu or by pressing Ctrl+Alt or Ctrl+Alt+Shift with the appropriate letter or number. Shift is added for uppercase letters. Accented letters and ligatures can also be inserted using the compose key (F6).  See Compose (F6).                

 

To use the menu to insert these characters:

 

1Place the cursor at the point where the accented letter or ligature should be inserted.
2Click Insert, Latin Vowels & Others
3The Latin Characters dialog will appear on your screen.  
4Click on the character to be inserted.  A square will appear around the character you have selected.  
5Click Insert or double click on the character to be inserted.

 

To use the keyboard to insert these letters:

 

1Place the cursor at the point where the accented letter or ligature should be inserted.
2Open the Latin Characters dialog by clicking Insert, Latin Vowels & Others as described above.
3Note the position of the character that you want to insert. Press Cancel to close the Latin Characters dialog.
4Press Ctrl+Alt+ the appropriate letter or number if you want to insert a lowercase letter or Ctrl+Alt+Shift+ the appropriate letter or number if you want to insert an uppercase letter.

In order to make it easier to remember the keyboard position of the accented letters, the accented vowels generally are placed so that they line up vertically with the vowel on the keyboard.  The colors on the chart show this relationship.  The accents are placed horizontally so that circumflex is on the top row of the keyboard (the numbers), umlaut is on the second row, acute is on the third row and grave is on the bottom row.  Other accented letters and ligatures are as shown in the chart.

 

Examples:

To insert ä, press Ctrl+Alt+Q

To insert Ä, press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Q
