All of the accented letters, ligatures and a few other characters in the Roman alphabet have been assigned positions on the keyboard and can be inserted from the Insert menu or by pressing Ctrl+Alt or Ctrl+Alt+Shift with the appropriate letter or number. Shift is added for uppercase letters. Accented letters and ligatures can also be inserted using the compose key (F6). See Compose (F6).

In order to make it easier to remember the keyboard position of the accented letters, the accented vowels generally are placed so that they line up vertically with the vowel on the keyboard. The colors on the chart show this relationship. The accents are placed horizontally so that circumflex is on the top row of the keyboard (the numbers), umlaut is on the second row, acute is on the third row and grave is on the bottom row. Other accented letters and ligatures are as shown in the chart.
