System Requirements

Nota Bene 9.0 works on computers running:
  • Any 32-bit version of Windows 7
  • Any 64-bit version of Windows 7 with XP Mode or its equivalent. If you have the Professional or Ultimate version of Windows 7, XP Mode is free and Nota Bene runs well on it. If you have the Home Premium version, the functionality is available but you may need to transfer or purchase a copy of Windows XP.
  • Any 32-bit version of XP or Vista (almost all copies of XP and Vista are 32-bit)
  • Any 64-bit version of XP or Vista when running a virtual machine/operating system (see the Windows 7 page for further information)
  • Any version of Microsoft Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, or 2000
  • Macs using some kind of “virtual PC” (e.g., Parallels, VM Fusion, or Boot Camp)

Our next-generation Nota Bene 10.0 (now available in a beta version) works on computers running:
  • Any version of Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7, whether 32-bit or 64-bit (it runs in native mode on all such operating systems — it no longer requires virtual mode)
  • Macs using some kind of “virtual PC” (e.g., Parallels, VM Fusion, or Boot Camp)
      In addition, provisionally NB 10 also runs on:
  • Macs under WINE (without requiring Windows)
  • Linux boxes under WINE (without requiring Windows)
      Initial tests on both are encouraging (everything that has been tested so far seems to work), but further
      testing is — and additional development may be — required before we can formally confirm and support
      full functionality in this environment

For detailed information on running Nota Bene on different systems, click the links above. To see if your computer is running 32-bit or 64-bit Windows, click the Start button, click Control Panel, click System and Maintenance, and then click System. Under System, you will see the system type.

The hardware configuration must include:

  • Approximately 30 MB of free disk space (Nota Bene is a very compact program, despite all the capabilities it provides)
    • Note: Currently, NB 10 requires about 100 MB, but we expect to eventually provide a 60 MB installation option (by excluding the multilingual dictionaries)
  • The minimum amount of memory recommended by the operating system in use (ranging from about 512MB on a Windows 95 system to 2GB or more on a Vista or Windows 7 system)
  • A CD drive or internet connection (for installation only)
