DOWNLOADING AND INSTALLING THE UPDATE
The following instructions describe a typical way of proceeding. Your browser and/or downloading program may operate somewhat differently. In any case, you may wish to print these instructions and carry out the steps from the printed page.
- FILL IN THE CUSTOMER INFORMATION AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE AND CLICK THE "DOWNLOAD" BUTTON TO BEGIN
- CHOOSE “SAVE” WHEN THE DOWNLOAD DIALOG IS DISPLAYED
Choose the folder—or simply select the default—where you want the downloaded file to be saved. (We strongly recommend that you retain the SWS80UI.EXE filename.)
Make a note of both the location and the filename (if changed) for subsequent use.
- WAIT FOR THE DOWNLOAD PROCESS TO FINISH
The download should take only a few minutes on DSL, cable, or other high-speed connections. (On 56K dial-up systems, downloading will take some time--up to an hour or more, depending on various factors. If it stops before then, see “Problems with Installation” below.)
- REBOOT YOUR COMPUTER
This step is optional only if you are absolutely certain that you have not used Nota Bene during the current computer session. IF YOU HAVE, YOU MUST REBOOT.
|
If you don’t take these instructions seriously, you’ll try installing, and likely fail, in the process perhaps losing some of your customized settings—although never your data. You can save yourself the trouble by rebooting after the download process has finished, but before unpacking the download file and installing.
|
|
If you are using XP or Vista, you can launch the Windows Task Manager and clear out the NTVDM process instead. (To do so, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete, select Task Manager, and then, on the Processes tab, click on the “Image Name” column header to arrange the entries alphabetically, find “NTVDM,” and click End Process, and then OK; repeat if further instances of NTVDM are already running.)
|
- OPEN/RUN THE DOWNLOADED FILE TO CREATE A “VIRTUAL” CD
Locate the downloaded file in Windows Explorer/My Computer (using the location and filename recorded in step #2 above) and double click it.
If you did not need to reboot, you can also select “OPEN” from your browser’s download dialog.
|
If you are downloading a full program (as opposed to an update to a version number you already have), you will be asked to type in the password that we supplied to you.
The installation process will then unpack the component files from the downloaded file to create the equivalent of a regular Nota Bene installation CD; it will place these files in a working folder on your hard drive. Note that this is not the folder where Nota Bene itself is or will be installed, but only an install folder. Although you can change this, it is easiest to simply use the suggested location.
|
If you have installed previous NB updates, you may be queried about overwriting files during this unpacking stage. Please click “Yes to All” to overwrite all earlier NB installation files.
|
Make a note of this location for subsequent use (in case you later need to reinstall).
|
Once all the files have been unpacked into this folder from the larger “container” file which you download from this web page, this folder’s contents will be largely identical to the contents of a Nota Bene CD. (The instructional videos and other add-on modules, such as languages and texts, etc. will not be included.) If you’d like to have a copy of the entire program on CD, you can burn a copy of this folder to your own CD. (You can also, of course, save the larger download file to a CD. But that file may require a password to unlock it, as described above. If it does, you will need to save that password with the file, preferrably by writing it on the CD.)
|
- CONTINUE INSTALLING FROM THIS “VIRTUAL” CD
After the “virtual” CD has been created, installation should continue automatically. Follow the prompts until the installation is complete.
Be sure to install it OVER your existing 8.0. (If you installed 8.0 on a drive or in a folder other than our default C:\NBWIN folder, you will need to re-specify that different location during the installation—i.e., the installation process will assume that the existing version is installed in C:\NBWIN unless you tell it otherwise.)
If for any reason you need to subsequently restart at this step, you should use Windows Explorer to browse to the “virtual” CD folder (see step #5 above), find the SETUP.EXE file, and double click it to restart installation.
If You Encounter Any Problems . . .
- Try installing again, following these suggestions in the order indicated:
If you did not reboot earlier, do that now, and try again.
If you are running Vista (this may also apply to XP), locate the SETUP.EXE file again (see step 6 above), and then right click on it and select Run as Adminstrator.
If you have an anti-virus program active, you should temporarily disable it before installing.
You can normally do so by right clicking on the anti-virus icon (for Norton, this is a shield) that is usually located at the lower right of your screen, and then unchecking the Enable... option.
|
Try installing in safe or diagnostic mode.
|
On Vista or XP, click Start, type “R” (on Vista), or select “Run” (on XP). Then, in the box, type “msconfig” (without the quotes). When the System Configuration dialog is displayed, select Diagnostic mode on the first General tab. Then reboot in this new mode and then reinstall Nota Bene. After installation is finished, retrace the steps above, this time choosing Normal Startup on the General tab.
|
-
You may want to download the program from our web site again (in case it was somehow corrupted during the download process), and then repeat various of the steps above.
-
Finally, if you still cannot install Nota Bene, please contact technicalsupport@notabene.com or call (718) 382-1500.
