ARCHIVA
Search On-Line Libraries

Archiva Pro lets you search over 500 on-line university and research libraries—right from within Ibidem—and capture the data of the records in Ibidem format.

Here’s how Archiva Pro’s on-line library search works:
1. From Ibidem, click Select, On-Line Libraries, or use Ctrl+L
2. Select the library you want to search (or do nothing to search the library last searched), and type in the search string, and click OK

3. The converted records will be added to the Archiva: On-Line Library Search Results screen right in front of your eyes!

Or you can choose to view the results in your web browser instead:

Archiva Pro uses the industry-standard z39.50 protocol to allow searching of over 500 major university, research, and national libraries (for example, the Library of Congress and the British Library). Using Archiva Pro, you can select, right from within Nota Bene, all the libraries available through the Library of Congress z39.50 page, as well as others, such as the Princeton and Cambridge university libraries.

Some entries have sublibraries. In such cases, you can either select the main heading, to search all the libraries listed beneath it, or select the subheading, to search only that library. In other cases, a particular library’s holdings might be able to be searched both directly and through some more comprehensive gateway. For example, about 30 British, Scottish, and Welsh libraries can be searched either individually, or via COPAC, which includes the holdings of the Consortium of University Research Libraries interface (CURL).

All these libraries can be searched for free—unlike the journal databases, no subscription fees are required. (While a given library could theoretically change this open-access policy, that is unlikely.)

Depending on the features supported by the library you are searching, Archiva Pro lets you:

  • Search multiple fields (connect with “and” or “or”) at one time
  • Use initial and final wildcards
  • Search for words at the beginning of fields
  • Search for phrases

Archiva helps you search efficiently by offering automatic tooltips describing the content of the field being searched. These tooltips—automatically activated unless turned off—provide:
  • The name of the library being searched (along with any useful information)
  • The database type (there are a number of basic groups of z3950 libraries)
  • General z39.50 field data
  • Database-type-specific field info (if any)
  • Library-specific field info (if any)
  • General searching instructions

  • Best of all, Archiva Pro does this all seamlessly from within Nota Bene/Ibidem—there’s no need to launch an external program, to learn different commands, or to go through a complicated process of incorporating the data from external files into your Ibidem database. Rather than forcing you to do something different, Archiva Pro lets you do everything in a comfortable, familiar, environment. It’s a fully-integrated—sophisticated but simple—extension of the Ibidem that you have come to rely on for all your bibliographic work. Since what you are searching for already appears, on the very first encounter, in Ibidem format, you’ll feel right at home. And feeling at home, you’ll be able to work faster, more comfortably, and more creatively than you could before.
