Version 7.0
Scholar’s Workstation & Lingua Workstation

Hyperlinks * Improved Display
Dozens of other improvements

“The new Nota Bene version 7.0 is a tremendous improvement over previous versions, making it truly competitive with the major office suite programs.” Click here for full review.
David A. Hackett, Associate Professor, Department of History, University of Texas at El Paso

“First looks at [Ibidem record links] leave the impression of a very elegant implementation as with much else in this latest build. We have never enjoyed such ease of use, stability, and useful, attractively implemented, powerful features. And now even better integration of the Nota Bene modules. It is looking very good indeed. So kudos and thanks are very much in order!”

Steven Uran, Centre d'Etudes Transdisciplinaires - Sociologie, Anthropologie, Histoire, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales

“Our friends at Nota Bene have done it again. Just the File Open dialogue and enhancements, the sophisticated paragraph indent and bulleting options, and the beautiful (but not distracting) display of formatting commands in Graphics View, would be worth it. But they've added easier moving between footnotes, microspacing adjustments, hyperlinks, fixed some minor annoyances, and much more. Not to mention what's been added to Orbis and Ibidem. The best word processor in the world has just become so much better!”

Lawrie Cherniack, Cherniack Smith Law Firm, Winnipeg, Mannitoba

“Version 7.0 is qualitatively something else: a major evolutionary change affecting the quotidian work of research and writing. The new ‘hyperlink’ that threads throughout the suite’s applications really impresses.”

Mark D. Szuchman, Professor of Latin American History at Florida International University and and Associate Dean of Faculty and Graduate Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences

The following list provides a brief description of some of the features that have been added to version 7.0:

Hyperlinks can be inserted in Nota Bene files or in Ibidem fields. Use these hyperlinks to automatically open an e-mail message, go to a web site, open a Nota Bene file, open a bitmap image, or open any file that has an extension that is associated with any program on your computer.

A new system of automated research links uses specialized hyperlinks to bring an entirely new level of integration to Ibidem, the Nota Bene word processor and Orbis. The new system is easy for beginners to use and it provides a powerful and integrated system for note-taking, bibliographic management and finding/retrieving notes. Start in Ibidem by entering bibliographic data (author, title, publisher, etc.) in an Ibidem record, or go to a previously created record. Then click a new button on the Ibidem toolbar to create a Nota Bene note-taking file that is dynamically linked to the Ibidem record. Click the same button to return to the same file whenever you want to take more notes. All of the note-taking files thus created and linked to records in an Ibidem database can then be indexed in an Orbis textbase so that Orbis's powerful multi-file search and retrieval capabilities can be used to find notes when you need them. A new type of Orbis textbase has been added so that the process of creating the Orbis textbase is easy for beginners and convenient for experienced users. See Ibidem: Links to NB and Orbis.

Improved File Open and Save As dialogs can now be resized and moved, and the program will remember the changes you make. Larger dialogs make it easier to navigate through different folders and files. In addition, you can copy, move, delete, rename files from the File Open dialog by right-clicking in list of files on right. See Resizing the Open File and Save As dialogs and Managing Files from the Open File Dialog.

A new Quick Open dialog can save names and dates of last 99 files opened, save commonly used paths and open files quickly.

Screen display functions have been completely rewritten. In previous versions of Nota Bene, one or two lines close to the cursor flickered when typing (this was more noticeable on some systems than on others). The flicker has been eliminated. Spacing between characters and words on screen is much improved. Underdots, overdots, high or low accents should now be always visible and accents can even overlap accents on the previous or next line. Extreme flickering in Outline View has been fixed and the last character in italics is no longer clipped.

Bullets and numbered items (counters) can now be entered more easily. The Insert Numbered/Bulleted Item dialog has been expanded and new toolbar buttons have been added to the Formatting Toolbar.

Formatting of bulleted or numbered lists and indenting/outdenting of paragraphs is now easier. Three new buttons have been added to the formatting toolbar that allow you to indent or outdent a paragraph and to change default settings for how the right margin is treated when a paragraph is indented. See Formatting Numbered/Bulleted List.

Seventeen new non-printing markers can be seen in Graphics view, and are helpful in showing the presence of various embedded commands. These markers can be displayed or hidden at your option. For more information, click the new Configure Markers button on the View toolbar (usually at the bottom of the Nota Bene screen) or press Shift +F10 or see Markers.

RTF filters used to convert Nota Bene files to/from other word processors and to move text to/from the Windows clipboard were excellent in version 6, but we have continued to make improvements. Batch conversion now uses a much better RTF import filter where appropriate. After converting a Nota Bene file to RTF format, you will automatically be given an option to open the converted file in whatever application is linked to the RTF file type on your computer (this is usually Microsoft Word, if you have Microsoft Word installed on your computer).

Insert Filenames. File names, with or without the full location, can now be inserted into a file, or a header or footer.

Improved Header/Footer Window. New buttons have been added to insert file names with or without the full path and to insert your name (information is taken from the Style Manual dialog).

New buttons on the Framework toolbar. An Insert/Edit Headings (Alt+Ins) button gives direct access to Insert, Section Heading or Outline Level menu. Buttons are also available for Begin/End Block Indent (Shift+Enter), Select Current Item and Select Entire Branch.

Reset default toolbars. An option to reset default toolbars has been added to the Interface Options dialog (View, Interface Options).

New spacing adjustments give you full control over the spacing between words and letters. Em, En and Thin spaces have been added and new microspacing adjustments let you insert positive and negative microspaces between characters.

Improved cross references. You can now double-click on a cross reference label to go to and/or edit item being referenced.

Improved Go To dialog. More items have been added and the dialog now remembers last go-to item. When last item is Footnote/Endnote, cursor is positioned in the Number text box so you can easily type the note number (this greatly facilitates going to a particular number).

New keyboard shortcuts have been added to move between footnotes: Ctrl+Alt+Shift + [ and ] on most keyboards; Ctrl+Alt+Shift + < and > on keyboards where either of the above keys are assigned to characters.

Customize your keyboards Menu support for customizing keyboards has been added.

Added optional British spelling dictionary

Added new Style Manual options. The Style Manual now handles names in user-specified order (surname can precede given name). Icons for start and end of title have been improved. Alt + Ins added to display the Insert/Edit Headings dialog (this gives quicker access to the various options on the Insert, Section Heading or Outline Level menu).

Added Printable Codes On/Off document view. This turns all opening/closing command brackets into printable characters, so they are visible in Graphics View. This function is recommended for experienced NB users only.

Improvements to Ibidem:
  • The Ibidem preview panel is greatly enhanced. The style for the preview can be set to match that used for citations in the active document, and it changes as you switch between documents. A formatted citation can be inserted directly into file from the preview panel.
  • An auto-date feature has been added that can automatically record the date that a record is edited.
  • An option to automatically refresh table view when records are added or edited has been added. This option may result in some pauses as the table is refreshed, so some users may prefer not to enable this option.
  • New Record Links enhance a research system that integrates Ibidem, the Nota Bene word processor and Orbis. Field Links can also be used in any Ibidem field to automatically link to a web page, an e-mail address, a graphic image or any other file that is connected with any program on your computer.
  • On the Generate menu, Orbis Note Forms are now called Note-Taking Files, and non-printing annotations have been removed from the standard forms. (The annotations were removed so that Orbis searches would find only notes taken by the user and/or relevant bibliographic information, but not annotations that described the use of the forms.)

    Improvements to Orbis:
  • Entries can now be retrieved from files that are open during an Orbis search.
  • Updating an Orbis textbase when files have been edited or added is easier. The Orbis indexer will remain visible so you know when process is finished.
  • Column tables are now retrieved in their entirety from Orbis (when applicable).
  • Orbis table view now shows full filenames.
  • Zoom in Orbis entry panel (previewing entire entry) now adjusts margins so full width of text can be seen. You may need to adjust the zoom setting the first time you use Orbis.
  • As previously noted, a new type of Orbis textbase has been added to automatically handle note-taking forms that are linked to records in an Ibidem database (Orbis, File, New Textbase)

    Improvements to Lingua:
  • Multilingual text can be typed in the spelling dictionary edit dialog (also for replacement pairs).
  • Multilingual text can be typed in Ibidem cite dialog page number field (e.g., to reference superscripted numbers).
  • Unicode encoded texts from websites, other programs, etc., can be imported into Nota Bene (with some restrictions)
